Herbal Infusions

One way to add therapeutic value to your skin care creams, lotions and gels is to add a herbal infusion with benefits for that particular skin type.

To make a herbal infusion, place 30g dried herb or 60g fresh herb in a heatproof bowl and pour 500ml boiling spring water over. Leave to infuse for up to twenty minutes then allow to cool. Strain the liquid off and discard the herb material. Add the infusion to the water stage of the cream or gel-making process, ensuring that you include it in the water portion of your formula..

Always add a preservative when combining herb material with skin care products. Dosage will vary depending upon the preservative used.

Some herbs that can be used in this way are:

  • Chamomile

  • Lavender

  • Lemon Balm (Melissa)

  • Borage

  • Goldenseal

  • Horsetail

  • Iris

  • Lemon Verbena

  • Peppermint

  • Sage

  • Soapwort

  • Thyme

  • Yarrow
